David Simpson

Objective
When a virtually unknown Republican primary challenger, David Simpson, filed to run against State Rep. Tommy Merritt for the Texas House District 7 seat, it was a true “David vs. Goliath” battle. Simpson had no name recognition among District 7 voters and only 90 days to mount a credible campaign. He enlisted Encore Multimedia to efficiently use limited campaign funds to mount a “miracle campaign” against a seven-term incumbent.
Solution
Encore’s approach was two-fold: To establish Simpson’s name as a recognizable District 7 challenger, and to position him as the “people’s candidate” against an entrenched incumbent. The graphic design team began developing Simpson’s logo and producing an assortment of direct mail, banners and push-cards used by the Simpson campaign to establish name recognition in the community. The web team developed a state-of-the-art website for Simpson that introduced him, his family, his values and his positions on key issues. Secondly, Encore worked with Simpson to deliver powerful key messages about his position on issues and his image as the “people’s candidate” for District 7 voters, capitalizing on the anti-incumbent political climate sweeping the nation. This was achieved through a series of highly targeted and persuasive direct mail pieces, as well as Encore’s public relations services in securing television and print media exposure with Simpson hammering home his key messages.
Results
In the second-largest Republican primary upset in Texas, Simpson defeated the incumbent, garnering 52.88% compared to Merritt’s 47.11%. The stunning upset attracted statewide media attention. Encore continues to work for Simpson on numerous web and collateral projects, including the development and programming of his new social media-friendly, blog-style website whose design and functionality is on par with that of major-league national politicians.
